Professional Development

As part of campus leadership teams, I've had the opportunity to lead staff development sessions on various topics. Each summer, the leadership team was tasked with summer book studies and facilitated development sessions and small group training throughout the year.

In 2014, leadership was asked to read Disney University and find ways to apply its principles in the academic arena. Being a former Disney cast member, I was assigned as lead for this particular study. Our classrooms are our stage, our students our audience. We may not think of teaching in terms of the performing arts but many of the qualities overlap. It is up to educators to deliver a top-notch performance every day.

We also did a campus-wide read of Mindset by Carol Dweck. I found this particularly applicable to music education and Gardner's multiple intelligence theory. Everyone has varying amount of these intelligences but they can be nurtured through development. As educators, it is valuable to understand our own intelligences and how they can affect our teaching styles. My presentation notes are available for review.

Manipulative Madness was accepted to present at NAfME All-Northwest Convention in Portland, OR in February 2019. This was a "make-and-take" style workshop where attendees learned various applications and accommodations for hands on learning and had the chance to make their own resources for immediate implementation in their own classrooms.

All of these sessions are of my own creation. Please contact me if you are interested in sharing them.
